What you heard in church is what is getting so many people up in arms. They hear about a PART of the new abortion laws in those states, but they never take the time read the bills in their entirety and find out what they actually allow, and what they don't.
For example, none of the bills in any state will allow a doctor to perform an elective abortion to abort a healthy baby up until the time of birth.
The bills say exactly the same thing that has always been done. That being: If a team of doctors are all in agreement, an abortion can be performed late in the 3rd trimester, but only if continuing the pregnancy would pose a great threat to the life of the mother.
In reality, when the pregnancy is that far advanced, the unborn fetus is viable outside the womb. In that case, a C-section will be performed, and that will save the life of the mother AND the life of the child.
Somewhat of an exception would be: When a team of doctors has medically determined that the unborn child is so severely deformed that it cannot survive outside the womb, a woman can elect to terminate the pregnancy late in the 3rd trimester.
If a woman doesn't choose to abort and the deformed baby is born alive, the baby will be given every care that can be given, in order to keep it as comfortable as possible during the few minutes or few hours it has left to live, but no heroic measures will be taken to prolong its life. It will be allowed to die naturally.
Elective abortions for the convenience of the mother will NOT allowed that far into pregnancy.
All these new laws are being written as a result of the anti-abortion crowd who want ALL abortions banned, and the Roe vs. Wade decision over-turned. Almost every state is passing new laws as to what that state will permit and what it won't permit, in case Roe vs.Wade is ever over-turned. This is what the anti-abortionists wanted, and this is what they got. They've opened up a Pandora's box; the like of which they never dreamed about.
