Wouldn't Trump been a lot smarter to declare a national emergency to build the wall and then see how that went before agreeing to anything?

No, I don't know that the Declaration of emergency would have worked.

You seem to be suggesting using it after the shut down and then keeping the government shutdown until it works. The problem here is that the shutdown was quickly approaching a crisis Point. Politically, it was devastating for Trump who saw his approval rating drop 8 points because of the shutdown. Logistic Lee things appeared to be at a Breaking Point. LaGuardia Airport was shut down yesterday because of sick outs by air traffic controllers. Other workers appear to be on the verge of a work stoppage. This could have crippled parts of the US economy. He simply could not wait to reopen the government.

In terms of using instead of a shutdown the problem there is that it establishes a precedent where the president could get what he wants by bypassing Congress. That may seem satisfying to Republicans now, but what happens when we have a democrat in the white house?

He hasn't made a viable enough case to declare a state of emergency.

His racist "criminals f/ shithole countries" argument only works on other racists.

The super vast majority of drugs are confiscated at legal points of entry. Another significant amount arrive by submarine. Overstays are the much bigger undocumented immigrant problem etc. No wall stops this.

"Over the past 24 years, the amount of money spent on border security has increased 14 times; the number of border patrol agents have increased 500 percent; the amount of border wall has grown from 77 miles to 700 miles since 2000; and the number of people being apprehended trying to cross the border have decreased by four-fifths."

There, I've just submitted more relevant data to the debate than trump has.

If he had declared the emergency yesterday, it would have looked like he caused a crisis w/ his shut down.

And declaring an emergency f/ a crisis w/o a viable case resets the bar significantly. This executive order is reserved for the most critical developments.

Of course thats what is going to happen.

And guess what: Trump will pay for the wall with the billions of assets we seize from Mexico's cartels annually.

So, then Trump can run next year:

WE BUILT THE WALL!! MEXICO PAID FOR IT!!

    Thunderous Applause Nationwide

Trump wants Congress to do its job. I don't think it is too much to ask.
