Why didn't Ginsburg resign when Obama was still in office instead of waiting until a republican was in charge of appointing her replacement?

Don't know. I admire her a lot, but I wonder if she would have served the country better, and her own values better, by doing what you suggest. Of course, Obama might have found it difficult to impossible to get a successor for her confirmed by the Republican-controlled Senate.

Remember what happened when Obama nominated Merrick Garland to replace the late Justice Scalia on the Supreme Court after Scalia's death in early 2016. The Senate Republicans, under the leadership of Mitch McConnell, refuse to even hold hearings on Garland's qualifications before the November 2016 election, and when Trump won the election, it was clear the next Supreme Court appointee would be someone nominated by the GOP.

Ginsburg may have figured that the same thing would happen to anyone Obama chose to replace her, if she'd retired on his watch.

She was trying to break a record for the longest serving Justice and that was more important to her. Plus her husband died and she didn't want to be bored sitting at home in a rocker with her cat.

Many Democrats didn't like or trust Obama as they pretended to be one big happy family to fool the electorate. It seems that Ginsburg didn't trust Obama to make a good choice. Plus, Ginsburg loves all the adulation she gets from fawning Liberals.
