Why are so many auto manufacturers putting resources into autonomous driving?

Autonomous driving is about as dumb as electric cars, why bother?

If autonomous driving happens prepare for a high amount of property damage and deaths.

Dumb answer: I don't know either. There must be money in it somewhere.

Public acceptance is never going to reach the level of being family cars, at least beyond the level Neighborhood Electric Vehicles are now. That leaves niche applications - replacements for designated drivers, public transportation (trading the expenses of human drivers for the expenses of automation), delivery vehicles.

The safety aspect is gradually surfacing and it is not pretty. The recent history of large scale automation is also checkered at best; ask the designers of the automated baggage system at the Denver airport how they liked it. After more than half a billion dollars they are using humans, which are faster than the automated one was designed to be.

Because sooner or later some enormous ASSHOLE politician is going to inflict a law on us that REQUIRES manufacturers to build and sell self-driving vehicles. Look back at the history of automotive "safety" and fuel economy.

Robots are making cars now. Might as well make them drive it too.
