skyrim is there any pros to just having one one-handed sword without a shield?

    There's no benefit for going one-hand only without spells/shield on the off-hand, except the ability to parry an attack using your weapon (which much better using a shield). So it's better that you either use a shield, spell, or go dual-wielding on your off-hand.

    I don't know really, I never bothered with a shield.

    You can have a spell in the other hand. Pretty sure that’s the Spellsword class
