First, what is property? “Land, possessions, money”
According to US News, in the US:
In “1769 – The colonies adopted the English system decreeing women cannot own property in their own name or keep their own earnings.”
So men, either husbands or male family members, owned women’s lands and possessions, if they had any, plus men kept any pay women got working..sure sounds like they were property, but not slaves.
Now this was an improvement, but husbands had to approve, god forbid you didn’t get along:
“1839 – The first state (Mississippi) grants women the right to hold property in their own names – with permission from their husbands.”
In 1900, women could own property and keep their earnings, but women who worked for the public sector, couldn’t get earnings after this passed:
“1932 – The National Recovery Act forbids more than one family member from holding a government job, resulting in many women losing their jobs.”
Most people aren’t taught much about women’s history, or forget it, or dismiss it..if men couldn’t own their own stuff and only your wife could own all your wages, land, and your toothbrush, are you property, a child, a non person? Sure sounds like it.
