This is an American issue.
I am going to use the terms left and right or left and conservative rather than "liberal" for the left leaning political. In my country, there are several parties and they are all conservative right wing parties. Go figure! But I can't help but think of "liberals" as conservatives...
In America, they are political rather right.
Ok so think of two rulers - one going to the left and one going to the right, 0 in the middle and X left and right (I use metric so I'd think of 10 or 100, if you're American, pick whatever number you want), At the extreme right is capitalism. On the extreme right is communism with socialism somewhere on the way out there. In theory there is theoretical zero. In practice the "middle" is more fluid 0 may or may not be zero.
In the US, the central point is solidly more right than other countries. The "inner left" politicians in the US, would be the "inner right" in my country. The inner right would be middle right. The middle right would be considered the extreme right. This is pretty standard when comparing the US and other first world nations...
Americans seem to see anyone who is left as communists.
