How much propane does a propane smoker use?
Let's say I wanted to run it at 225F for 12 hours

You can usually get approxiamtely 18 hours of cooking time out of 20lb gas bottle for a bbq,so you'd want to have your smoker hooked up to atleast a 20lb propane bottle to run for that length of time,with some room for error.

Are there really PROPANE smokers? The operative word here is "smoke" (a by product of burnt WOOD). That being said one school of thought in smoking something like brisket (that takes 12+ hours) is to smoke it for 5 or 6 hours (that is, by theory, all the smoke it will absorb or affect flavor) then wrap it in foil and finish it in the oven. Must admit I haven't done that.
