The differences between Sunni and Shia Muslims arose from a disagreement over the choice of Muhammad's successor. Sunni Islam is the larger denomination.
Kurds are an ethnic group, not a religious group. There are Muslim Kurds, Christian Kurds, Yazidi Kurds, Zoroastrian Kurds, etc...
The Kurds are culturally, historically and linguistically classified as belonging to the Iranian peoples.
