Can I take my 2000 Toyota Camry and turn it into an electric car? If anyone has like a very thorough book or tutorial on how to do this?

You can definitely do it. If you want to keep it registered and actually drive it then you have to check your state laws about such a modification. For most people like myself, it would be easier to purchase a used Camry or other hybrid car and get the hybrid battery replaced if/when necessary.

First get lots of $$$. Mother earth News has old article on pickup made electric cheap- surplus jet engine starter got GPU kit, coupled to transmission and 10 or 12 reconditioned 12 volt industrial batteries with some series and parrellel wiring to get up to 36 volts in steps. tranny for reverse and gear selection for battery voltage selected meant cruising speed of about 20 mph, 35, 50 depending on 12 volt, 24 volt, 36 volt- a golf Cart variable resistor would give 30% variance in speed each voltage, gear combination. 50 to 100 mile range and overnight charging. 500 pound payload instead of 1000 since batteries weighed about 1/2 payload. still about $3000.00 at the time.

Sure. No prblems. Such a thing is so easy that anyone who has to ask on Yahoo Answers how to do it, can actually do it.

Toyota camry's are very good for modifying due to their masterful aisan production. This means that taking out the engine and inserting a battery should be easy. I suggest using a pack of duracell AAA batteries so you have lots of replacements to start with while you test you mods. Then you can move up to using D batteries.
