The only thing I can think of is that they were the first team to deploy lady cheerleaders who wore very little clothing including outfits with kinky go-go leather boots, mylar bustie bikini tops, and cute cowgirl hats. They looked like professional sex workers more than old fashioned pom pom girls. Their cheerleaders inspired an entire genre of movies after "Debbie does Dallas". a movie about a girl named Bambi Woods who will do anything to be a cheerleader for the team. The Cowboys not only played great football under such quarterbacks like Roger Staubach, it was America's fantasy team for cowgirls!

The NFL wanted to make the Steelers America's team in the 70's but the team was against the title. They thought of the team as Pittsburgh team and so the name was offered to the Cowboys.

I never heard anyone outside of Texas refer to the Cowboys as "America's Team" except as a mock, sarcasm, or even a pejorative.

    1. Good marketing back in the 70s

    2. Neither the Texans nor this version of the Browns existed when the marketing term became popular.

That was the name of the 1978 highlights film produced by NFL Films. The opening line was -

They appear on television so often that their faces are as familiar to the public as presidents and movie stars. They are the Dallas Cowboys, "America's Team".

They thought up the marketing slogan first, and it stuck.
