Do Americans know anything about India, except Taj Mahal and Kamasutra?

Well, aside from miscellaneous book chapters and articles, I read "A Short History of India and Pakistan" and also the novel "The White Tiger," which got really good reviews from Westerners and really scathing ones from Indians on Amazon, the standard complaint being that it lacks verisimilitude on account of the narrator supposedly being this uneducated lower class guy who writes in this ironic literary style like Nabokov or something. But apparently the events in the story are all based on stuff that actually happens, and as an outsider I felt like it gave me a pretty good basic insight into how things work there.

I know Baba Sen, the World's Greatest Head Massager, died of a heart attack two days ago.
