Were Scottish people pirates or vikings?

Some Scots were pirates, but then just about everybody practiced piracy to some extent. In Ireland and England it was even an accepted, if not entirely respectable, profession (Ex.: Drake, Grace O'Malley) The Scots, however, successfully fended off the Vikings. (Something the English utterly failed at).

It is not so cut and dry, as some were pirates, some Vikings, some had Viking ancestry, and several more were all of the above. A few famous Scottish pirates include, starting with the most famous, Captain William Kidd, Sir Andrew Barton, and Alexander Dalzeel. Vikings conquered and/or settled in the areas in and around what is modern Scotland, Ireland, and England, particularly the islands such as the Hebrides. And then there were Viking/Scottish pirates, such as Thorbjorn Thorsteinssen. Of course, Vikings were essentially pirates to begin with.

Norwegian Vikings did conquer & settle parts of Scotland, eg, Shetland Is. & Orkneys. There's an Orkney saga.

The Scots are of two groups. One very large group actually came over from Ireland who settled in the West of Scotland. The smaller group found in the East and North were Picts, a subgroup of Celts. I would say they were definitely not Vikings and as far as pirates, ANYONE can be a pirate.
