No way. My 80th birthday was Wednesday, and I'm pretty happy with my life. What went wrong was I was an old man in my 20s. Full of responsibility for other people's values, and trying to walk a tightrope of morality and obligation. Then my wife ran off with a theater guy, and I began to reassess my values.
I quit letting other people define my values and my value as a person. I became proactive in training my ego to love me instead of dissing me (every morning in the shower). I defined my life goals, and began working toward them. And I did an inventory on my weaknesses, and shored up that weren't up to the career path I followed.
It worked, and I have a wonderful if sometimes irritating mate, a great place to live and engaging hobbies. I work hard to keep my mind active, and to be engaged (currently in politics, no surprise).
To end up satisfied in life, you have to define what will make you happy, and work toward a goal OF YOUR OWN DEFINITION. Simple, and it works.
