NOTHING. --- He instituted Reaganomics, his form of trickle down economics and gave the rich a big tax cut. One thing in his favor was that, in his 2nd term. he realized that it was NOT working and signed a large tax increase to try and fix his problem.

He broke the law with the Iran-Contra affair, but no one would prosecute him ... he should have been impeached. Ollie North took the fall for him, but both and more from the administration deserved to go to prison. --- This is now a 30 year old topic, there was probably more, but I would need to read to refresh my memory.

Reagan inherited a country that had endured more than a decade of economic staglfation. High unemployment, low growth, shortgages, high inflation. It largely perceived itself as losing the cold war to Russia and was feeling the hangover of Vietnam. It was seen as losing it's economic edge to Europe and Japan. Being American felt like something you were supposed to apologize for.

What Reagan did was reverse all of that. Cutting taxes, deregulation, reinvigoration and price in the military, a sounder money supply (though to be fair, Volcker did alot of that last one and Carter nominated him). Reagan wasn't perfect, and many conservatives overpraise him, but he was a pretty damn good President. So far, no President who followed him has been better, though Clinton was pretty good too.

Reagan's main failing was that when he couldn't get the domestic spending reforms he wanted, he went ahead with some of his other plans unchanged. This meant that deficits skyrocketed under him. The degree to which he contributed to the long term problem is still dwarfed by entitlement growth for which he was neither a solution nor a cause, but conservatives really shouldn't give him a pass on the way deficits rose under his administration.

He got America on the move again after the travesty of Jiminy Carter. I started my company shortly after Reagan was elected and then rode the 35 year wave of almost uninterrupted prosperity that Reagan did a lot to create.

Not much. He politicized the military in 1981. He lied to the American people about his treason with Iran to win the election by scuttling hostage negotiations in exchange for aircraft parts and weapons during a trade embargo while trading cocaine in East LA he traded for weapons to Central American drug cartels to pay for it.

Reagan and GHW Bush are in large part responsible for establishing the drug cartels that have been cursing the Americas for the past 37 years.
