Can expired ophthalmic solution damage the eye, or is it just less effective?

Tobradex is expensive without insurance, and I am prone to conjunctivitis.....

If it is unopened and has been stored somewhere cool, I'd use it for up to a few months after the expiry date.

But that's not an expert opinion - just a personal view as I believe expiry dates have a built-in margin of error.
