Why did the teacher respond like this?

I remember when I was in secondary school, I had this supply teacher I barely knew but for the most part she was very polite.

She seemed supportive of me but when i got hopeful about getting a good grade she said 'There's no guarantee' in a very nasty way. Her whole charm suddenly disappeared....it was out of the blue because I didn't actually do anything to annoy her and I think she knew that I wanted to get on with her.

Is she a narcissist and I mistook her for a nice person?

It sounds like the carrot and stick or good cop bad cop approach. She was trying to tell you don't become complacent.
