The most dangerous Luftwaffe units (to the bombers) were on the ground – the Flakkorps (anti-aircraft artillery).

Between 1943 and through the spring of 1944, extremely effective. During that period, they honed their tactics to a deadly point, and there was still enough fuel and spare parts to keep their fighters in the air. But after that and to the end of the war, the steady attrition and loss of fuel, components and highly experienced pilots, and finally. the advent of Allied long-range fighter escort severely limited the Luftwaffe's capability. By war's end, overwhelming numbers Allied aircraft could range all over Germany almost completely unchallenged. There was no real shortage of aircraft, but due to lack of fuel and spare parts, most of the Luftwaffe's fighters remained on the ground where they were readily destroyed. Even German jet and rocket-propelled fighters were too little, too late, these latter had little more than a psychological effect, and Allied pilots quickly learned how to exploit these new designs' weaknesses.
