Is the POTUS Above the law and immune from all laws that we must follow as citizens?

It just seems that way. I don't think this is what our forefathers wanted for us.

Several presidents in our recent past have ignored the constitutional limits to their powers. They got away with it because Congress went along with them or because nobody was in a position to challenge them. These presidents were Nixon, Reagan, GW Bush, and now Trump. (See a connection there? 8^) ).

Each of these presidents was described in the media as 'the most powerful president of modern times', or said to be 'expanding the powers of the White House' or the Executive Branch'. But what they really were was out of control, improvising beyond the Constitution.

It used to be that presidents who won by huge landslides were the ones who claimed a mandate to push the limits of their constitutional authority. (Nixon, Reagan). But now even presidents who didn't even get a majority of the popular vote are claiming enormous mandates, behaving as if they won by huge landslides (GW Bush, Trump).

Part of this is the fault of American voters, who don't understand how the Constitution is supposed to work. Part of it is the news media, whose job it is to inform people but who instead go for cheap 'infotainment'.

And I think a part of it is the disgusting 'Doctrine of the Unitary Executive' developed by Reagan's people, the idea that our founding fathers really wanted the president to be the primary leader of the country, and the job of the other two branches was just to follow his lead and support him. GW Bush used this doctrine whenever he overstepped his bounds.

Trump is the worst, of course. He really has only a vague idea of what the actual job of the president is! He expected to run the White House the way he ran his business empire, as The Boss, with no checks and balances against his power. And he either doesn't see the difference between truth and lies, or doesn't care.

It might seem that way mainly because he is quite hated by people and when things dont go the way they want this is the perspective they end up with..
