Was thrash metal or any other metal genre ever mainstream in the past?

Not counting nu metal or glam metal. Mainstream like trap is now.

Why did the older generations eschew mainstream popularity and the top 40 but this new generation is the opposite?

Nope Thrash Metal had its 'boom' between 1985-1989 but nothing compared to grunge, emo or nu metal are in current days the most closer thrash bands were from top charts was when some Bay Area thrash bands like Testament released albums less 'heavier' to try surf on grunge or glam metal wave. It failed. Faith No More and Metallica also did it on their own way around 1989-1991 and get success reaching the top of charts.

You can say Glam Metal was a subgenre of Metal that in some epoch was on the charts through bands like Van Halen, Europe, Triumph, Mötley Crüe, Whitesnake, etc.
