How far can a protestor go? Should there be human decency limits?

No, we cannot limit a person's freedom, if someone wishes to shout, ball, break windows, hold offensive signs, and burn bins, we should usually trust in them having a reliable reason for doing so. However the police and their actions are not those of conscious choosers, merely order-following drones carrying out the work of the power system's machinery.
People should be allowed to do as they please so long as it is not actively harming another or their freedom.

Is that "can" as in "physically able" or as in "legally allowed"?

I think we as a society should decide that some people go too far. How far is "too far?" We need to draw red lines. Do you think threatening the life of another is acceptable?
