Would legalizing the SALE of drugs pretty much take away the profit, power and violence associated with drug trafficking?Couldn't govt?

simply maintain laws regarding their USE if their REAL concern was society rather than maintaining the profits to gangs/cartels/govt agencies/etc.?

Update:

Alvin Colmes · like alcohol, making drugs legally available doesn't have to mean legal to use

making all drugs legal is an insane idea, legalize pot? ok but nothing else

  • It would not fix the problem however

Just legalize, tax, and regulate. Banning drugs does not make them go away. That's a fairy tell conservatives tell themselves to help them sleep at night as they profit from coercive labor from the private prison industry. The government banning drugs simply places the control of drugs in the hand of black markets, who exploit as many victims as possible for profit. Drug use and drug overdose has dropped everywhere it's ever been legalized.

If we legalize/decriminalize all drug possession, manufacture and sale, you could also cut taxes to reduce the necessary resources for Law Enforcement and the courts. Not to mention prison industry will also see less revenue.

Police need to focus on violent crime, like usual, but it would save lots of people money and wouldn't waste Law Enforcement's time.

Look what happened in Colorado and the other 420 legal states. Cartels had a presence there before and were pushed out by legal sales.

The concern is, though, responsible use. Not everyone does this. Once you commit some other crime whether or not you're using drugs, you deserve trouble

No, the corrosive nature of addiction and the costs to society is something government should not sanction. LOL

Yes, but the DEA wants to stay in business, just as much as the drug cartels do. Their business are mutually symbiotic, each depends upon the other. If drugs are made legal, both the drug cartels and our own DEA will no longer be needed.

No! But it would certainly increase the cost to the public for treatment
