It is very useful weapon. In a pinch or emergency situation you can use just abt anything as a bo. Such as a broomstick, cane, pipe, umbrella. And for short sticks (like in Kali/escrima) you can use a rolled up magazine or news[paper, a short piece of pipe etc. You get the idea.
Most martial arts or MA schools will have you train with a bo before you train with a spear, bokken or sword.
Also just spinning and doing strikes, doing forms with a weapon is a great exercise, it also improves flexibility and coordination as well as a good cardio exercise.
