Some of the media is very biased and often selects headlines and words to bait potential viewers to watch their show / buy their newspaper or periodical. If the children are throwing a fit and are being physically removed away from their parents, then I could understand the more sensational word of 'ripping.' If the separation process is being handled with minimal trauma, then something like 'sheltering' would be appropriate. The reality of the situation is that the adult illegal immigrants need to be processed, the illegals are responsible for putting the kids in that situation, the process should be done in a way to minimize any trauma to the kids, but it can be a tough situation any way. If you average criminal in the US did a bad act while they had their kid(s) with them, citizen or not, the police would need to separate the adults from the kids while the perpetrators were processed - so I do not see the difference in this situation.
