All sciences have "frontiers," beyond which knowledge is controversial or unexplored. The science of evolution is no exception. Scientists generally agree that random mutations, natural selection, and genetic drift can explain a lot of what is found in the fossil record, but problems do remain.
BTW, the evolutionary advantage of religious belief lies in the realm of "faith" healing. People do heal better if they expect to heal better. I can't see why "the ability to ponder the nature of the universe" should be useless -- at the most fundamental level, it explains how we industrialized!
