Some guys yelled “going like a clapper” (or something like that) while I was walking home. What does it mean?

I’m 15 and they were teen boys.

“Going like the clappers on the bells of hell” is a very old expression, more than a hundred years old. The clapper is the part of the bell that swings and strikes the bell to make the sound.

“Going like the clappers” is a slang expression, means going very fast or very much.

“Going like a clapper” does not have a meaning. It means the boys were using an expression they don’t understand. But they probably think it means having sex a lot, i.e. going like a slut.

On the other hand, they could have said going like a slapper. A slapper means a slut, a low-grade woman, one you slap to get any sense into her.

    Horrible, aren’t they?

Pay no mind to them. They are just fools, that is all.
