Mothers who are having their second or subsequent child, make a decision based on their previous experience. First time moms will have heard 'breast is best', but have probably observed many babies being bottle-fed and may have done it themselves. Here are my 10 reasons not to attempt breastfeeding, at all.
- Medical reasons - If you think this applies, seek medical advice.
- The baby is to be adopted or you are a surrogate mother. It is better for you to reduce the risk of bonding.
- Sharing . Formula feeding allows you to pass the baby to family members and friends so they can have turns. But don't worry about being left out. There will be night feeds.
- You are so coy you can't even go into another room, because 'everyone will know what I am doing.' (But the fact you announce you have had a baby (unless you can fake he/she was adopted will tell them what you did!
- You think breastfeeding is too animal-like. (Wouldn't it be wonderful if IVF was cheaply available so we didn't have to reproduce like animals.)
- You and/or the baby's father works for a formula company. Breastfeeding is bad for business.
- Either or both of you have shares in a formula company.
- The thing you really hated about being pregnant was lack of periods. There is a better chance of them returning sooner if you don't breastfeed.
- Some mothers talk about 'the joys of breastfeeding' or say 'I was too lazy to formula feed.' Each to their own. Why should you miss out on the joy of preparing feeds, washing and sterilizing bottles?
- You honestly believe that the milk nature provides for you baby, which adapts to their needs is inferior to a Synthetic Milk Alternative.
