where? here in the Uk, there were lots of varieties of apples, pears, plumbs, apricots, peaches, cherries, strawberries, raspberries. these would be grown and sold in season. blackberries often grew wild and could be picked for free form hedgerows etc. apples could be storied in straw and last through the winter with care. other season fruits might be bottled or made into preserves. MOre exotic fruits were growin in hothouses or imported from abroad and were very expensive, like oranges, grapes, pineapples, etc. taht is why children often got an orange in their Christmas stockings, because for most ordinary people an orange was a treat, not something to eat everyday. YOu wouldn't get the lavish display of fruits all year round that you get in greengrocer so nowadays.
