Fixing a bad drywall seam?

I had a bad seam that I had to fix. I did the taping and mudding, sanded it nice and smooth and then repainted. The repair is now very visible. The only thing I can think of is that I didn t use drywall primer before painting. Would that fix it?

correct. your mud needed to be primed before you repainted ... preferably the entire wall, btw

How is it visible? Lumpy, raised, different texture or surface finish? Need more info.
