Will 8th generation motherboard run 7th generation CPU?

Hi, so im willing to buy a motherboard that supports 8th generation Intel processors and i only have 7th generation intel i5 7400, so will the motherboard run my i5?

Sorry but No it won’t.

Think of the 6th and 7th Generation as 1151 v1 and the 8th as 1151 v2.

Intel said they had to reroute which pins supply power to the CPU in order to accommodate these 6 core processors.

If you think that’s bad. Rumors are flying about the Core i7-9700k coming with 8 cores. On top of that Intel is going to ditch z370 in favor of z390 sometime later this year. So no one is certain that the z370 motherboards will work with this 8 core CPU.

As always, the best thing to do is go to the manufacturers website to find the CPU compatibly list.

IMO, maybe you should sell off your 1151 v1 parts and then get at least a Core i5 8400 or 8600k and a z370 board. In tests, these new Core i5 processors run neck and neck with the older Core i7 processors.

This has been covered a thousand times. Intel says the function of the pins is different but we all know they're being greedy. A rep from Asus said these 8th Generation processors could have worked on these high end z270 motherboards. There are no magical hacks to the Microcode or a hacked BIOS that will make it work. Some people who are very skilled with coding have been able to make a Core i5-8400 work on a 100 series motherboard but they weren't 100% successful at making it work without any issues.

IMHO, Intel should have allowed these 8th Generation processors to work on higher end motherboards.

I suppose you're thinking that a simple 7th Generation Core i5, which is more like a new Core i3 should work, but it doesn't. You see, they have you where they want you. Now you have to look for a 8th Generation CPU in order to get the CPU you want.

Nope, Kaby Lake CPUs are not compatible with 300 series motherboards, nor are Coffee Lake CPUs compatible with 100 or 200 series boards.

They have the same pin count but the pins themselves are not wired the same.

Any motherboard manufacturer worth buying from will have a list of compatible CPUs on the motherboard's website. Always check this list when buying a motherboard.

No, even though the sockets are the same. You cannot use a Kaby Lake CPU in a Coffee Lake motherboard.
