I've traveled some and may or may not speak more than a few words of the local language. No great problem. If the locals don't speak English, many speak French and we can sometimes understand each other's accents. (I had fun trying to communicate with a Syrian soldier that way. It didn't work.) If all else fails, there are Berlitz phrase-books, drawings, and gestures.
