How do you clean the surface of an iron?

I've cats, thus cat hair is on everything no matter how hard I try to avoid that fact - thus cat hair gets onto my iron and it impacts on the irons ability to smoothly glide over clothing. How do I keep the iron surface clean?

I clean my iron using good old fashion waxed paper. A trick I used to watch my Mum do back in the 50's. Get the iron hot and press it into the waxed side of the wax paper the slide it across to clean the iron surface. Then finish using a ball of aluminum foil.

When the iron is dead cold, spray alcohol and wipe down with a rag or paper towel.

Wipe it off, while cool, with a wet rag.
