The Desert in New Mexico?

I am translating an American comic to Japanese and I would like to ask a question regarding the sentence below:

"Just looking at the photos of when dad took us out to the desert that time."

The speaker lives in New Mexico.

What I'd like to know is, "the desert" in this sentence implies any specific desert or not?

Please advise.

Naming the desert is not relevant to the story. The Sonoran desert covers the entire Southwest and northern Mexico.
