I tried to make smoked chicken for the first time, but it tastes like fire wood. If I steam the chicken, will it take some of the smoke away?

As an aside, you lightly smoke fowl like chicken and turkey as they take up smoke more easily than beef or pork.

you have to use the right wood like apple wood don't use fire wood

Probably sweat off some of the smoke.

Probably make it a bit more palatable. When I smoke chicken (whole or breasts) I usually only smoke with alder or fruit wood for a couple hours then complete cooking in the oven. (A little longer smoke for whole chicken).
