My lobes and the cartilage on my right ear were done with guns, and while I was too little to remember my lobes, I remember my cartilage never healing correctly and my top ear piercing actually cracked and became horrible deformed and infected and never EVER healed at all. I had to take it out after 2 years of fighting a losing battle and can still feel lumps and bumps. My other two were saved with time and patience, but even those are lumpy and I would never dare put anything bigger than a 20 gauge hoop through them. I can't even have studs in them, because when I sleep on them, they get all inflamed.
So you were lucky ONE TIME with a gun, but that doesn't mean you will be again, especially with a small area like the tragus. One slip, and it's crooked, cracked, bleeding, and never healing. Also, a stud with a sharp back is going to SUCK for healing and sleeping on. Why would you want to sleep with that thing poking your ear all night? Go to a professional with needles. That's the only way to ensure it's done correctly.
