Britain got to continue being Britain, while half of Germany was under the control of Russia for several decades.
If 21st century Germany is an economically strong nation now, then that is most likely partly due to the fact that they are a nation motivated to prove themselves, to rise above the dark chapters of their past.
Once upon a time, Britain ruled the waves. Now, their power is measured within the perspective of the global society that has developed in our age, an age where nuclear missiles can decimate any part of the globe, and many nations other than Britain have that power. It wasn't WWII that saw the end of Britain's supremacy, it was human progress. Britain is a powerful nation, but now, it certainly isn't the only one, and some nations have industrial resources that Britain could never compete with without help.
