Yes, today's video cameras are more expensive but they also have more technological advancements that enable you to do so much more than the cameras of yesteryear. And they have many more features, functions and options, too, to allow the user more control over the resulting images captured. Today's cameras also have special coatings inside the lens barrel to prevent light aberrations and distortions and better engineered glass elements that render sharper images, better color renditions, etc. Did you consider that?
There ARE affordable video cameras sold everywhere but I suspect you're selecting video cameras with more technology that you're willing to pay for.
