The thing is both a Les Paul and a Strat have lots of "sounds" depending on who's playing the guitar, what, if any, effects are used and, maybe most importantly, the amplifier and how it's set up.
I'd say that with a lot of distortion (the sort a lot of kids with cheap amps like to use when they post "covers" on You Tube) you don't even need an equaliser or a humbucking pickup. Maybe back the tone control off a bit but, basically, any guitar used like that produces the same sound (or maybe I'm just getting old!).
In other contexts I say that with an appropriate "humbucking pickup" - not a "super-duper distortion, high output, ceramic magnet pickup" - many players with a decent amp could get pretty close, especially when played with other instruments.
No, it will never be exact, but in most cases it could certainly be similar.
