Let's start with your first premise - your friends did not get out of debt, closing the account or changing their details (which could be considered fraud) doesn't alleviate the debt - eventually their creditors will catch up to them.
As for your debt, you need to start living within your means - if you are being charged overdraft fees, that means you are using more money than you have so you will have to put your self on a strict budget (note that if you go the debt consolidation/counseling route, the agency you work with will have you on a very tight budget = you'll basically have to account for every last penny you spend). Say goodbye to your smart phone for a while and get a flip phone with minutes, cut back on spending (if you have cable with pay channels, get rid of them, etc.).
If your creditors do sell your accounts to collection agencies, yes they can take you to court, ruin your credit, and it ill cost you extra when they tack on their interest plus costs to collect the debt.
