Multimedia: With textbooks, films, lectures, internet websites and sometimes field trips to museums or historic sites. The curriculum varies widely state to state, and even school district to school district. Learning is in stages and usually consists of local or regional history, then American history, then world history. Unfortunately, history education is not very effective and students have low interest, yielding a poor overall understanding of history and abominable performance on tests compared to other countries. One major national study concluded that less than half of high school students had a rudimentary understanding of U.S. history and only 12% were proficient at it.
