Trouble picking pin-tumbler lock (see description)?

I’m just starting to learn how to pick and I’m practicing on a padlock. I’ve picked it once and it took me about 5 hours. I don’t think I’m doing this right. I’ve picked it once and it took me about 5 hours. I don’t think I’m doing this right. First, I’m trying to pick by single pin because I want to be able to develop this skill. The only way I’m able to know which pin in tiuchingg is by lifting up the first one, pushing back, lifting that one up etc. I can’t move pins in the back without lifting the front ones. With a little tension, none of the pins bind and even if I hear a click they just pop back down. If I put even a little bit more tension the key pins get stuck above the sheer line. Any advice on what I’m doing wrong would be helpful
