1. Heat of the Sun.
White does not collect the heat when they are out in the sun.
2. Cleaning, In the olden days they used volitile chemicals (gasoline, etc.) to clean the paint off. It tended to fade colours and bleach them white.
3. Original clothing was cheap undyed cotton, no sense to dye them because of 1 and 3 above.
4. For wear and tear some wore Sail cotton, a heavy undyed material. see 1, 2, 3 above.
