Why do Police stations in New York have Irish flags flying out side them?

Lots of Irish-heritage police officers, in years past. Same in Boston. If you saw the Mark Walberg movie, you heard his charterer say the the bombers who blew up the Marathon had to be really stupid - EVERY SINGLE FAMILY in Boston has a brother son, father, uncle, granddad or neighbor that is a cop or firefighter. And you see how fast they caught the scum. I might be a New Yorker now - but I am still Boston Strong.

Back in the day, the NYC police dept was largely IRISH heavy.

Their marching band is heavy on bagpipes and drums.

I do not know why on any particular day. The flag of the NYPD is sometimes mistaken for an Irish flag, simply because it has green in it, so I also do not know if you actually saw an Irish flag.
