I am not sure what wiring lingo means in regard to what others are saying (parallel or in series), however, we once had a hard wired security system with hard wired smoke alarms. When we put the house on the market, I had the system inspected to be sure everything was working properly. One smoke detector was not working and because the system was antiquated, the technician recommended just removing that one detector and covering the hole with a metal plate. I was standing there watching him disconnect and remove the disk while we were having a conversation. He got off the ladder, went to the panel and set the smoke alarms off to test them again and then he tested the alarms on the entry points. All were in working order.
So, based on that experience, I can say that all of the other 8 smoke alarms were in working order when one was removed.
