I do not know whether you prefer dispersed, primitive-developed, or commercial developed camping. Last summer, I enjoyed wonderful hikes from dispersed campsites in the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho to remote lakes; then, waterfall hikes from dispersed campsites near Lost Creek at the western base of Mount Hood in Oregon. In northern California, I stayed at a splendid KOA among the redwoods at Crescent City, enjoying hikes among the redwoods and along the coastal shores with fresh crab fried in butter. My trip was rounded-out with hikes up Mount Shasta and Mount Lassen. Mount Shasta has dispersed camping near Bunny Flat Trailhead. Warning: do not stay at the Lassen KOA unless you enjoy the noise of nearby trains. Mount Lassen, being within a National Park, has primitive to developed campgrounds. However, I stayed at a Deluxe Site at the Lassen KOA west of the National Park.
