I would ban asasult weapons and oversized magazines, including them in the 1932 act banning machine guns as weapons dangerous to the public peace. I would require registration of guns and bring in a Canada style firearms acquisition permit that would have to be obtained before guns or ammunition could be purchased, to include a background check, psych evaluation and mandatory safety course.
On that last, you wouldn't believe how many times this ER nurse had seen morons who stuck a loaded pistol in their pants without knowing it would go off with the safety disengaged. The lucky ones shoot their foot.
In my heart of hearts I would not restrict handguns, rifles or shotguns, and not just because I own some. I would, however, admit that the First Amendment obliges the government to keep the public safe and require some level of qualification before allowing purchase.
