I am a gun nut and I don't mind the waiting period. I doubt it does much good since virtually no legally purchased firearms are used in the commission of a crime (a few thousand murders a year versus 200 million privately owned firearms), but it's not a big deal.
I don't really want a waiting period to discuss guns after a shooting, but I do want people to stop and think, not make far reaching laws based on emotion and media sensationalism.
Lots of propositions based on those things would not really help. For example, restoring the federal assault weapons ban -- the manufacturers would just modify the guns cosmetically so the ban would not apply... The same thing they did before. Others propose a ban on the AR-15... Well that would only apply to new sales, doing nothing about the ones already out there and shooters would just switch to the next most popular sporting rifle.
There are always unintended consequences to these things. There is no single, easy or quick answer.
