Years ago I went to see my doctor. He said 'Of course it wouldn't hurt you to lose 20 pounds'. And I laughed out loud because I had just seen a single-panel cartoon in the New Yorker where a man is standing in a doctor's examining room with an arrow through his head and the doctor is looking at his chart and saying 'You know, it wouldn't hurt you to lose 20 pounds'.
The thing is, most of us are overweight, if not obese. MOST of us could benefit from losing a little weight. Weight contributes to some of the US's biggest health problems, its biggest killers! Not just obesity but heart problems, congestive heart failure, breathing problems, even some kinds of cancer.
Doctors today are taught to SAY something about things that are killing someone, like smoking, drug use, and stuffing yourself like a turkey. I'm on Medicare now and I get a list of periodic services I'm overdue for, like physicals, blood tests, etc. Included in the list is 'Smoking Cessation Counseling'. When I make an appointment the girl at the desk says 'You're overdue for your smoking cessation counseling!' I tell her 'I never smoked in my life'. She says 'Oh. I'll make a note of that.' But I still get the notices. 8^P
