    Your expression is an identity and not an equation

    LHS = (x + y)^-2

    = 1/(x + y)^2

    = 1/[ x(1 + y/x)]^2

    = 1/x^2(1 + y/x)^2

    = x^-2(1 + y/x)^-2

    = RHS
