The last sitting president to not run for reelection was LBJ, who died in 1973. Johnson had achieved extraordinary success domestically when he filled out the remainder of Kennedy's term and with his first term but by 1968 he had been terribly damaged by the escalating war in Vietnam. He decided not to run for reelection. Since then, every sitting president has decided to run for reelection she eligible, and all of them, except for Ford, Carter, and George HW Bush, have won a second term.
